8 things to check before buying a used car

Buying a used car is a big decision. This checklist helps you check the most important points yourself before you pay, even if you are not an expert.
The quick version
- Make sure the chassis number matches the registration card.
- Ask for the service history and accident report.
- Have the car inspected at an approved centre before paying.
1. Match the chassis number
The chassis number (VIN) is the car’s identity. Compare it with the number on the registration card, the windscreen and the door frame — any difference is a warning sign.
2. Ask for the service history
Regular servicing at the dealer or a known garage means the car was looked after, and shows any repeat problems.
3. Check the body and paint
Look at the car in daylight for differences in paint shade or uneven gaps between panels — signs of earlier repairs.
4. Check the accident report
Ask for the accident report from the relevant authority or the dealer. A minor accident is not necessarily a problem; what matters is knowing what happened and how it was fixed.
5. Look at the tyres
Uneven tyre wear can point to an alignment or suspension problem. Also check the production date printed on the tyre sidewall.
6. Start the engine cold
Ask for the engine to be cold when you arrive. Listen for unusual noises on start-up and watch for smoke from the exhaust.
7. Test drive it yourself
Drive the car on normal roads and on the highway. Pay attention to gear changes, steering stability, brake noise and the air conditioning.
8. Get it inspected at an approved centre
However good the car looks, an inspection at an approved centre before paying protects you from surprises. We are happy to arrange it for you.
